If You Are a Smoker with Diabetic Nephropathy and Hypertension

Diabetic Nephropathy and smoking

Smoking greatly harm people’s health especially diabetes people. Tobacco contains more than one thousand compound, most of which are harmful to people’s health. Nicotine in the tobacco can continuously damage blood vessels wall, arteriosclerosis. Smoking damages kidney function by affecting the blood flow within the body. Smoking hardens the arteries and narrows the blood vessels, which can restrict blood flow to the kidneys and cause them to be less efficient.

On the other hand, smoking can affect diabetes. If someone has diabetes and kidney disease, smoking can reduce renal function and result in ESRD. People with diabetes who smoke tend to develop kidney problems more quickly and lose kidney function sooner than people with diabetes who do not smoke.

Hypertension and smoking

Smoking also increases blood pressure. If a person has high blood to begin with, smoking only makes it worse. Smokers with high blood pressure can increase their risk of reaching end stage renal disease.

Diabetes, diabetic nephropathy and high blood pressure

Diabetic nephropathy is caused by diabetes which is characterized by high blood sugar. High blood sugar can damage the tinny blood vessels. If the tinny blood vessels in the kidneys are damaged, kidney problems occur. High blood pressure occurs before or after the kidney disease. High blood pressure play important role in the progress of kidney disease. On the other hand, water retention can raise blood pressure. It is a dangerous cycle. High blood pressure also can cause heart disease and stroke which is life-threatening.

In summary, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, high blood pressure, and smoking has close relationship. They greatly affect each other. So, giving up smoking is very crucial for people with diabetic nephropathy.
