Prognosis of Diabetic Nephropathy (Diabetic Kidney Disease)

When urine protein presents, most of the time the kidney disease caused by Diabetes has developed for more than 10 years. The glomerulus disorder is already occurred in early stage of Diabetic Nephropathy. However, there are no obvious symptoms in this stage, but microalbumin can be detected by examination. If proteinuria (protein in urine) presents, renal function will decrease gradually. But a lot of experts are working on treatment of Diabetic Nephropathy. About 25% of patients with Diabetic Nephropathy (Diabetic Kidney Disease) develops end-stage kidney disease within 6 years; about 50%of patients with Diabetic Nephropathy develops end-stage kidney disease within 10 years; about 75% of these patients develop end-stage kidney disease within 15 years.

In addition, the blood sugar of patients with Diabetic Nephropathy, which is not controlled well, will lead to aggravation of renal function damage, especially when there is high blood pressure and high protein intake.

Smoking could be a risk factor of Diabetic Nephropathy. 19% of patients with Diabetes have proteinuria, only 8% of non-smokers with Diabetes have proteinuria. 5%~15% of people with Diabetes develop end-stage kidney disease. However if the patients are younger than 50, 40%-50% of them develop end-stage kidney disease. What’s more, the prognosis of Diabetic Nephropathy has something to do with the Pathological changes of kidney. Diffuse and nodular Diabetic Nephropathy is more likely to develop end-stage kidney disease.
