Therapeutic Principles for Patients with Diabetic Nephropathy
1. Keep a healthy diet
A low protein diet can help patients with Diabetic Nephropathy alleviate glomerular hypertransfusion thus declining protein discharge and decreasing kidney damage. The patients should keep their protein intake within 0.6~0.8 grams/ kg per day. In addition, if the patients have Hypertension or edema, they should also limit the salt intake and keep its intake below 3 grams per day.
2. Control blood sugar effectively
Controlling blood sugar effectively has an effect in alleviating glomerular hypertransfusion and declining the incidence of urinary tract infection. Before the renal function of patients with Diabetic Nephropathy is damaged, there is no particular limitation on their insulin injection. However, after the patients’ kidneys begin to fail, they should adjust their insulin injection based on their own disease condition. For patients with Renal Failure, they have two reactions to the extraneous insulin. As the patients’ renal function declines, some patients’ kidney can not degrade the insulin normally thus causing the insulin content in blood to increase. If the patients do not decline their insulin dosage properly, they are very likely to have Hypoglycemia. On the contrary, some patients’ insulin receptors’ sensitivity to insulin declines so they should increase the insulin supplement so as to keep their blood sugar within control. Therefore, Diabetic Nephropathy should control their insulin dosage properly based on their own disease condition under their doctors’ guidance.
3. Keep blood pressure within normal range
Hypertension is a dangerous factor for patients with Diabetic Nephropathy. It can increase the protein discharge thus accelerating kidney damage. Therefore, the patients should control their blood pressure strictly. If the patients’ urine protein is less than 1gram per day, they should keep their blood pressure within 130/80 mmHg. However, if their urine protein is above 1 gram/24 hours, they had better decrease their blood pressure within 125/75 mmHg.
In recent years, the number of patients on dialysis caused by Diabetic Nephropathy is higher and higher. Therefore, in order to decline kidney damage caused by Diabetic Nephropathy, all patients with Diabetes should receive effective treatment as early as possible.
