A Successful Case of Treating Type 2 Diabetes with Stem Cell Transplant
Ten years of polydipsia, polyphagia and polyuria. The fasting blood-glucose (FBG) before admission is 14.55mmol/L, the blood glucose afer meal is 18.88mmol/L. After normal treatment the blood sugar still can not get well controlled. Random blood glucose level is 5.6mmol/L, Urine Routine: urine sugar ( +++ ), acetone body(+),blood potassium 3.25mmol/L.
OGTT shows: The fasting blood-glucose (FBG) is 6.59mmol/L, the blood glucose two hours afer meal is 16.93mmol/L, glycolated hemoglobin is 12.5 %, ultrasound shows: slight fatty liver, blood vessel ultrasound shows atherosclerosis. The diagnosis is Type2 Diabetes
The effect after the stem cell transplant:
After 35 days’ treatment by stem cell transplant in the hospital, the patient’s condition gets recovered. Before admission, the highest dose of insulin he uses is 39U. After stem cell transplant, he has stopped using insulin. Now he is only using a small amount of oral glucose-lowering drugs, and his blood glucose is controlled between 4.4 – 6.2mmol/L.
The result afer half-a-year follow-up visit: he is insisting on a proper diet and regular exercise to control the blood glucose. And his weight is controlled at 70kg( standard weight). And the fasting blood-glucose is controlled between 5.6mmol/l, 5–6 mmol/l after meal.
Recent research shows: There are two aspects of dysbolism for the increasing of the blood glucose in the Type 2 Diabetic patient. 1. Pancreas β cells become abnormal or even large amount of βcells reduce, which lead to an obstacle of the secretion of the insulin. So the insulin secretion reduces. 2. Because of tissues which are susceptive to insulin, like liver and muscle, the insulin resistance occurs.
After the stem cell transplant, the patient’s condition become lots better, for the stem cells can have a strong effect on the Type 2 Diabetic patient. Firstly, the stem cells can replace the abnormal β cells, increase the cells, make the autologous β cells repaired, and increase the susceptibility to the insulin, so the insulin secretion will not go too high or too low, and recorrect the insulin paracrisis. 2.
