Seven Tips for Patients with Diabetes to Protect Kidneys

First, once we find that we are suffering from diabetes, we need to take treatment to control the blood sugar at the normal range. For most patients with type-Ⅱdiabetes, there is no obvious symptoms in the early stage. When there are some obvious symptoms, patients may have some kinds of complications, which is harmful for the patients’ prognosis. So, to control the blood sugar within the normal range is very important in the early stage.

Second, most diabetes patients are complicated with high blood pressure. Both diabetes and high blood pressure are harmful for the kidney, so, patients must make a good control of blood pressure. For the patients with high blood pressure, they had better control the blood pressure under 140/90mmHg, and as for the patients with both diabetes and high blood pressure, the blood pressure should be lower. No matter for type-Ⅰ or type-Ⅱ diabetes, a better choice to control the high blood pressure is ACEI, which can reduce the excretion of protein for the diabetes patients and delay the decline of the renal function. The second one is calcium antagonists, which have no side-effects on the glycolipid metabolism.

Third, restrain the intake of salt. Most patients with type-Ⅱ have the problems of overweight, obesity and eating too much, taking too much salt. As we all know, salt contains much sodium, most of which is filtrated by the kidney. so taking too much salt will increase the burden of the kidneys, leading to the pathology of the kidneys. Besides, people eating too much salt are likely to suffer from high blood pressure, which is, as we all know, very harmful for the kidneys.

However, taking too little salt also harmful the body, if there is not enough salt, it will affect the renin-antiotensin system, the regulation of the kidney tubules, endocrine, endothelial cells and various factors.

Forth, intervening treatment in the early stage which has good effects on the patients in the early stage of diabetic nephrothy. Some scholars have applied antioxidant (such as Vitamin E and C), angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and pill of six ingredients with rehmannia on the patients without kidney damage and patients in the early stage of kidney damage, both of the two kinds of the patients have very good treatment effects. Besides, if the patients also have the high blood pressure, patients should take some hypotensor. On one hand, this can increase the sensibility to the insulin, on the other hand, this can decrease the transudation of the urine protein and protect the kidneys.

Fifth, take regular examination to observe the blood sugar. Blood sugar can change a lot with the environment and season as well as the medicines, so it is very important for the patients to monitor the blood sugar, urine protein and blood pressure. If not, the high level of blood sugar will lead to the kidney problems. Some patients only test their fasting blood sugar, while, indeed, post-prandial glycemia also need to be observed, because the patients are in the state of postprandial glycemic for 2/3 time of one day.

Sixth, reasonable diets

According to the clinical research of the intake of protein, high protein diets can increase the blood flow of the glomerulus and the pressure, aggravating the high level of blood sugar and causing the change of the haemodynamics. The intake of protein should be high quality of animal protein, which can reduce the burden of kidneys caused by the break-down of the protein and fat.

Seventh, avoid the medicines which are harmful for the kidneys, such as gentamicin, streptomycin, amikacin and so on.
